Qld crossbenchers pan Brisbane Olympic bid

Katter's Australian Party and Greens MPs say the government's priorities are all wrong after it announced that Brisbane had been installed as the preferred bidder for the Games by the International Olympic Committee.

Brisbane is all but certain to be the third Australian city to host the Games after Melbourne had the honour in 1956 and Sydney in 2000.

Katter's Australian Party MPs Robbie Katter and Mick Dametto say the bid will ensure regional infrastructure investment will lose out to the southeast for another 10 years.

Mr Dametto said investing in the Olympics was irresponsible when the state debt would climb to $120 billion over the next four years.

"We're going to be in debt very soon and what are we going to do, we're going to spend another billion dollars and have a party down here in Brisbane," he told reporters.

"I'm sick to death of north Queensland and rural Queensland generating the income for Brisbane to have a party."

Greens MP Michael Berkman said he couldn't get excited about the Olympic bid.

He said the government should be investing in education, social housing and child safety to help address issues with youth crime.

"A lot of people are very excited about it, but I guess I've got my concerns about us focusing our resources, our investment in something like the Olympics, a big spectacle, when a lot of Queensland are still doing it tough," Mr Berkman said.

The opposition supports the Olympic bid, saying the focus should now be on getting infrastructure ready in the southeast.

Liberal National Party sport spokesman Tim Mander said it was important that the benefits of the Olympics are spread across the state.

"Being a very decentralised state we have to make sure that everybody benefits from these games," he told reporters.

"That's what we want to work with the government to make sure that regional cities are able to host events, whether it's the actual events themselves or training events leading up to the Olympics, or even pre Olympic events that will happen over the next 10 years

"It's important that the whole state feels like they're involved, and not just perceives it, but experiences it with infrastructure spending as well in those areas as well."

The premier promised the regions won't be left out, with some soccer matches already set for regional areas and various teams to train outside Brisbane.

"Of course all of the state will share in Olympic glory so we want to make sure this is inclusive in Queensland and that we all have a part of history here," she said.
