Concept plans for a clifftop walk, which will provide stunning views of Port Hacking and Gunnamatta Bay, have been placed on public exhibition.
The walkway along the Hungry Point Reserve clifftop will extend the Esplanade from Bass and Flinders Point, linking Salmon Haul Bay with Darook Park.
The state government has provided a $2 million grant to the Hungry Point Reserve Land Manager (Trust) for the project on the former fisheries research centre site.
This will include incorporating community feedback, completing the final design, applying for the regulatory approvals and studies and constructing part of the walkway.
Hungry Point Reserve is Crown land, managed by the Hungry Point Reserve Land Manager under the Crown Land Management Act 2016.
Sutherland Shire Council is providing project delivery support.
The concept plans, with an invitation to comment, are on the Join the Conversation page on the council's website.
Chairman of the Hungry Point Land Manager John Rayner said the "much anticipated" project was moving closer to reality with the public exhibition of the design plans.
"With state government funding, council and the Hungry Point Reserve Board engaged consultants to undertake studies and develop a concept design for the project," Mr Rayner said.
"We welcome comment from the community."
Cronulla MP and Attorney-General Mark Speakman said Hungry Point was "a magnificent piece of land with significant environmental and historical value".
"I'm committed to ensuring it is utilised to the maximum benefit of the local community," he said.
Mr Speakman said the project would provide "one of the most picturesque walks in Sutherland Shire, with panoramic views of Port Hacking and Gunnamatta Bay".
"It's important that the concept design reflects our community's needs and expectations, so I urge anyone who's interested to provide feedback online before April 2," he said.
A drop-in session was held at the reserve last Saturday, where plans were on display and questions could be asked.
