Week two of Sutherland Shire Council's seniors festival is under way.
The festival, which runs until Friday, April 23, features dozens of events, with an emphasis on health and well-being, and this year's theme 'In our Nature'.
The aim is to help seniors become familiar with a variety of local services that offer suitable programs for residents over the age of 60.
Events include fitness activities, art workshops, educational seminars, film screenings, hobbies and interest groups, plus opportunities to explore the great outdoors.
Sutherland Shire mayor Steve Simpson said he hoped to see as many seniors as possible enjoy the program of events.
Among the activities planned for this week are:
Healthy Ageing Seminars - Hearing and Vision, Tuesday, April 20, 10am-noon. Sutherland Shire Council and SESLHD Health Promotion Service have joined forces for this presentation, which features guests from Vision Australia and Hearing Australia. Active Mind Open Day, Tuesday, April 20, 10am-noon. Better Connected Community Services presents activities such as a trivia quiz and bingo. Listen to guest speakers and receive information. Details: 9544 0104.
Gentle Exercise and Tai Chi, Tuesday, April 20. Sutherland Leisure Centres will host a gentle exercise class at 11am followed by tai chi at noon. The leisure centres will also offer a range of giveaways for current members who are seniors. Details: 9532 0444.
Walking Basketball, Tuesday, April 20, 10am-11.30am. Basketball NSW is hosting "Come and try walking basketball", a low impact and social version of the sport. The session will include skills and game play to cater for all levels. Details: 8765 8555.
Your Aged Care Journey, Tuesday, April 20, 9am-1pm, Menai Marketplace. Your Aged Care Journey and Menai Marketplace are offering a free no-obligation 30-minute consultation to discuss options on how you can live and age well with confidence and choice.
Social and Savvy Seniors, Wednesday, April 21, 10am-2pm, Gymea Community Aid and Information Service invites you to come along and watch participants break the record for Sutherland Shire's longest seniors' Zumba session. Intergenerational Storytelling, Wednesday, April 21, 6pm-8pm, this second screening of an indigenous short film festival coincides with youth week and is on at Hoyts Cinemas Cronulla. You're invited to watch a series of indigenous storytelling short films produced by older and younger generations. Details: 9710 0525.
Mastering the Aged Care Maze, Wednesday, April 21,10am-1pm. Wellness Champions is hosting two sessions at Club Central Menai. Topics include pathways to register for My Aged Care and how to get the best out of the Commonwealth Home Support Program. Details: 1300 637 301.
ANZAC exhibition and afternoon tea, Thursday, April 22, from 3pm. Woronora Cemeteries Historical Society, in conjunction with Sutherland Shire Military History group, will hold the event in the grounds of Woronora Memorial Park. Cost of Living Pop-in Sessions, Friday, April 23, 9am-5pm. Service NSW will provide assistance with cost of living and information on the Aged Care Driving Test.
