A group of seniors attempted to Zumba their way into the record books last week as part of Sutherland Shire's Seniors Festival.
And Leader photographer Chris Lane was there to catch the action.
Almost 30 Zumba proponents, all clients of Gymea Community Aid and Information Service, took part in a three-hour Zumba class - believed to be the longest seniors' Zumba session ever to take place in the shire.
It was the brainchild of Gymea Community Aid and Information Service's general manager Joanne Cracknell, who initially hoped to have a go at setting a Guinness World Record.
After deciding the associated effort and costs were too great for a community organisation, the service instead decided to set their own shire record.
The service's project leader Jenny Koutsonicolis said they invited people aged 65 and over who take part in their twice-weekly Zumba classes to register.
In the lead-up, Zumba classes were extended from the normal 45 minutes to two hours.
"They decided they could easily handle two hours so we increased it to three," said Ms Koutsonicolis, who ordered bright pink T-shirts for the event at Gymea Community Centre last Wednesday.
After weeks of preparation, 29 participants ranging in age from 65 to 84 took part.
Each was allowed three 10-minute breaks during the three hours, with a minimum number of people to stay on the floor.
Support people handed out drinks and pieces of banana and sausages to keep up their energy, while spectators cheered them on.
In the end, they easily reached their goal, with five of the participants not even taking a break during the three hours, Ms Koutsonicolis said.
She praised everyone who took part and thanked Christopher's Cakes for donating a huge celebratory chocolate cake, which they enjoyed at the end.
The event was held as part of Sutherland Shire Council's Seniors Festival, which ran from April 13-24 and featured dozens of events, with an emphasis on health and well-being, and this year's theme 'In our Nature'.
The aim of the festival is to help seniors become familiar with a variety of local services that offer suitable programs for residents over the age of 60.
Events include fitness activities, art workshops, educational seminars, film screenings, hobbies and interest groups, plus opportunities to explore the great outdoors.
During the Zumba event, pop-up stands offered information about seniors' activities.
