Size and spaciousness were features highlighted by shoppers when the new Woolworths full-line supermarket and Dan Murphy's store at Kirrawee opened today.
The $50 million shopping centre in Flora Street, opposite South Village, was officially opened by Sutherland Shire mayor Steve Simpson.
Cr Simpson said the council was "always happy to welcome new employment opportunities to our community, and notes that this new centre will provide even more variety for local residents in choosing where to shop".
Woolworths store manager Wayne Rheinberger said he and his team were "delighted to offer the local community a great new shopping experience, with a brilliant fresh food offer and the convenience they're looking for".
"I'm celebrating 35 years of service at Woolworths this year and 25 years living in the shire, so I'm particularly excited our new store will provide more than 130 jobs, including 85 new roles for the local area."
The centre also includes cafe Macchina Espresso, with a barber shop Sir Groom Room and boutique nail bar Awesome Nails still to open.
Woolworths' opening hours are 7am to 11pm, 7 days a week.
Treina and Russ Collins, of Sylvania, were taken with the size of both Woolworths and Dan Murphy's.
They said the supermarket was "nicely laid out, clean, bright, warm and inviting...and the staff are amazing as well".
"It's also lovely over the road [South Village] but it's always cold," Mr Collins said.
Kristy Leitch, of Kirrawee, has been watching the development progress and came with her baby, Harper, five months, to see how it turned out.
"Just having a new supermarket is a bit of a novelty," Ms Leitch said.
"It is very spacious - everything is well set out."
Kate Barron, who shopped with her daughter Alexis, 3, said the supermarket was "beautiful"
"I like the layout of the fridges - all the cold shelves are enclosed. It's the first time I have seen that."
Leigh-Ann Campbell, of Kirrawee, was impressed.
"I'm not really a Woolworths shopper, but that may change," she said.
The centre includes 250 parking spaces at ground and basement levels.
A "direct to boot pick up" service allows supermarket customers to collect online grocery orders without leaving the car.
The traffic situation will be interesting to watch with entrances and exits to the Woolworths centre and South Village on either side of narrow Flora Street.
