Bayside Council will offer a reward for information supplied to the police to achieve a conviction of persons who cut down foreshore trees in Cook Park at Brighton-Le-Sands last month.
The trees were near the intersection of The Grand Parade and Bruce Street, the vicinity of where about 12 trees were cut down last October.
The council will also install a large sign on the site advising that fines apply to anyone vandalising trees in the public domain.
In a motion put forward at last night's bayside Council meeting, Councillor Bill Saravinovski called for the reward as a final way of stopping the vandalism of trees at the site.
"This isn't the first time it has happened here. Hopefully this will prompt someone to advise the police and we will get a successful conviction," Cr Saravinovski said.
"We need to send a strong message that we are not going to cop someone cutting trees for whatever reason on the beachfront.
"This has been the second time in two years that someone has cut the branches off the trees for no reason.
"Hopefully we will get a successful conviction of whoever that person was who decided to cut them down"
Cr Liz Barlow said the trees had been difficult to access and would have to have been cut down during the day.
"Someone might think it was council pruning the trees. Hopefully a reward will jog someone's memory and we will find out who it is," she said.
Deputy mayor James Macdonald said residents were up in arms about the vandalism.
'We are talking about three to four trees that were cut down by chainsaws. I'm sure someone would have seen someone walking around with a chainsaw," he said.
Bayside Council general manager Meredith Wallce said the council is looking at the possibility of putting up a couple of prominent containers at the site with signs pointing out the tree vandalism.
Using containers will be better than erecting fabric or plastic signs that could be removed.
There will be a replanting program on the eastern side of the containers to replace the trees that were vandalised.
Cr Saravinovski also asked that the camera install a mobile camera at the site once the trees have been replaced.
The reward for will a $500 gift voucher from the Bayside Garden Centre, which can be spent on plants or pots or item the Garden Centre sells.
