Lines of palm trees on both sides of Kingsway at Cronulla are being cut down as part of a new stage of the town centre upgrade.
Sutherland Shire Council says "the diseased and ailing palms" will be replaced with Cook Pines.
The work between the mall and Gerrale Street started on Wednesday night with the removal of four trees.
A statement on the council's website says:
"In 2015 the Cronulla Town Centre including the Kingsway were identified as being in need of a significant upgrade. This led to the preparation of the Cronulla Town Centre Public Domain Master Plan which was adopted by Council in 2018.
Analysis of the Kingsway identified:
- The need to create revitalised waterfront connections
- Patched and deteriorating footpaths
- Inadequate lighting on the road and footpath
- Pinch points in the footpath leading to crowding
- Palms with limited life spans due to fusarium wilt
- Irregular an inefficient parking
- The need to create a unified design style throughout the Cronulla Town Centre
Scope of works
The scope for the Kingsway project is to upgrade the northern and southern footpaths between Abel Place and Elouera Road on the northern side, and on the southern side between Cronulla Plaza and Gerrale Street.
Elements within this project, include:
- Upgrading of footpaths to quality paving. This will match the paving in Peryman Square Stage 1 work.
- Slight widening of the southern footpath to improve pedestrian flow between the Plaza and North Cronulla Beach.
- Upgraded lighting providing enhanced amenity and safety.
- Removal of diseased and ailing palms and replacement with Cook Pines.
- Creation of offset blisters for the new trees on the southern footpath, reducing pinch points.
- Creation of a disabled parking spot.
