Attendance levels across NSW public schools was 85 per cent on Monday, October 25 - the first day all school students were invited back for face-to-face learning since June.
The information was supplied to the Leader following a request to the NSW Department of Education.
The NSW Government's updated roadmap to return to face-to-face learning saw Kindergarten and year 1 students return to school on October 18, while the remainder of students went back to class on Monday, October 25.
A NSW Department of Education spokesman said 85 per cent of NSW public school students were onsite on Monday.
"This includes 90 per cent [of] primary students and 77 per cent of secondary students," he said.
"In the Greater Sydney area, 87 per cent of students were at school."
The spokesman said these attendance levels were "in line with the return-to-school trend experienced last year after learning from home concluded".
"The secondary student figure includes year 12 HSC students who are not required to be onsite," he said.
Other grade-specific data was not available.
A NSW Department of Education spokesman told the Leader last year that average NSW public school attendance levels was about 92 per cent.
All schools in Greater Sydney will follow a staged return to onsite learning under Level 3 plus settings from October 18
Under Level 3 plus:
- Priority to return to face-to-face learning will be for students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 12 as well as those completing their HSC.
- All department staff on schools sites must be fully vaccinated from October 18.
- While in indoor settings in schools, masks or face coverings are required for all staff and all students in year 7 and above. Masks are strongly recommended for primary students.
