Prime Minister Scott Morrison has laid out his Liberal and National Party government's net-zero by 2050 plan with a short PowerPoint presentation that was low on details and based on emissions reductions made by policy decisions of previous governments.
Mr Morrison said his 'plan' would be based on 'technology not taxes' but would not answer questions on how much taxpayers would pay to secure the National Party's support.
Minister for Industry, Energy and Emissions Angus Taylor said Australia should be proud of its record on climate.
Mr Taylor said carbon offsets would be 'an important part' of the plan.
Labor says the prime minister was trying to scam voters into thinking he cared about climate change goals after years of saying Labor's climate change policies would 'wreck the economy' and 'end your weekend'.
Barton MP Linda Burney said many would not believe Mr Morrison's policy backflip.
"What the prime minister announced isn't a plan. It's a scam and a slideshow at best," she said.
"There's no new policy and no new action-just an ad campaign.
"Australia deserves better."
Macarthur MP Dr Mike Freelander said the announcement was marketing and spin with little substance.
"For eight years, the coalition has been divided when it comes to climate and energy policy, and Australians have suffered as a result. Unfortunately, this remains the case," he said.
"By the prime minister's own admission, there is nothing new to be found in his latest "plan".
"Australians deserve a government that can govern in their interests, rather than one that is focused on spin for the next election.
"If the prime minister were serious about our energy future, he would have announced at least one policy aimed at supporting the manufacturing and the development of new technologies to drive job creation."
The coalition's climate plan comes as Labor extended its lead to 54-46 in the latest Newspoll.
The poll highlighted increasing community support for greater climate action, with 47 per cent of voters saying the goal of reducing emissions should be prioritised over lower energy costs.
Mr Morrison has confirmed he will attend the Cop26 conference in Glasgow.
Senator Tony Sheldon said Mr Morrison was going to Glasgow with his homework done in a rush the night before it was due.
"All Scott Morrison has come up with this week on climate is a Powerpoint presentation with zero substance. He didn't even make time to get his document to the printers before waving it around half-ready in the parliament," he said.
"He then had to be forced to table it in Question Time against his wishes - and he did so with all the enthusiasm of a schoolboy who knows he's about to get a bollocking from the rest of his class group because they're watching him steal their work and then try to seize the undeserved glory at the last minute.
"Scott Morrison is usually all promise and no delivery, but in this instance, there's not even really any promise in what he's proposing.
"It's a slap-dash attempt at playing politics with no concern for the science and even less regard for the people of Australia."
