St George's local community radio station 90.1 NBC FM has been nominated for two national community radio awards.
90.1 NBC FM has been shortlisted as a finalist in two categories of this year's Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA) Radio Awards for its Days in Australia podcast series.
The station joined with local arts group, The Australia Chinese New Arts Society (ACNAS) to create the unique bilingual (English and Mandarin) Days in Australia.
The podcast is based on stories in the book 'Too Blue to be True', published in 2019 and telling real-life tales of migration and settlement by senior Australian Chinese, many of whom came to Australia following the events of Tiananmen Square in June 1989.
Days in Australia was produced by the station's Community Engagement Coordinator, PP Cranney has been shortlisted as a finalist in the categories Best Radio Program -Talks; and Excellence in Ethnic and Multicultural Broadcasting.
The annual CBAA Community Radio Awards aim to celebrate innovation, perseverance and community champions within the sector.
90.1 NBC FM was one of 30 finalists in the awards announced by CBAA on October 25.
Mr Cranney said he was honoured with the recognition the 30-part bilingual English and Mandarin program has received.
"It's been exciting to be involved in such an innovative radio project," he said. "And the feedback, especially from the local Chinese community had been very positive. They want more stories!"
"90.1 NBC FM already has a number of non-English community language programs, but this one is accessible to both Chinese and English-speaking listeners.
"I hope it has helped create greater understanding between different communities in our wonderfully diverse multicultural society."
The series, which ran at 6:30pm on Fridays from November 2020 to June this year.
All 30 episodes of Days in Australia are available to listen to on-demand via 90.1 NBC FM's webpage.
The award winners will be announced virtually in December 2021.
In the meantime, 90.1 NBC FM and the Australia Chinese New Arts Society hope to make another series of the program.
The station also broadcasts programs in Macedonian, Chinese, Greek, Spanish, French and Indian and Nepalese.
This is not the first top honour for the station.
90.1 NBC FM Community Radio presenter Paul McGrath was awarded the Medal of the Order of Austraalia, OAM in the 2019 Australia Day honours for his service to broadcast media, particularly to radio.
The station's broadcast covers all of the Georges River local government area and half of the Bayside LGA, and Canterbury-Bankstown and Inner West LGAs.
