Several emerging artists from the area were announced as semi-finalists in the 2021 Doug Moran National Portrait Prize this year.
This is Australia's richest art prize, and quite an achievement for those who submitted entries.
The Moran Arts Foundation is a philanthropic, non-profit organisation. Its objective is to support the arts in Australia.
Doug Moran National Portrait Prize entries are original artworks from Australian artists, capturing Australians from all walks of life, whether a public figure or someone from their circle of experience.
Works are painted at least partly from life with the sitter known to the artist.
Self portraits and portraits of fellow artists were submitted as a reflection of the lockdown conditions.
Jae George of Bundeena, Thomas Kuss of Carlton, Kevin McKay and Jiawei Shen of Sutherland, and Evan Shipard of Jannali all have the chance to win a whopping $150,000.
Judges include prominent Australian artist Tim Storrier, who says he will judge entries based on scale, composition, tone and an overall "heightened sense of presence."
The winner will be announced on November 30 following an online exhibition.
