A simple Google check will tell you all you need to know about Manly-Warringah Cricket Club's latest fast bowling recruit. Tap 'Greg West v Michael Hill' into your search and be taken back to 2016 as young paceman West, making his Big Bash League debut for Adelaide Strikers, takes it to Hobart's Hill before 50,000 fans at Adelaide Oval.
Despite his lack of experience, a nerveless West engages in some tongue-fu with veteran Hill before forcing him off his feet and then taking his wicket, finishing with the impressive figures of 2-24.
Cricket legend Adam Gilchrist, sitting in commentary, remarks: "[West's] not concerned at all. He's very comfortable in the environment." Hill was not so impressed when asked about the banter minutes after getting out to his new-found nemesis: "Banter? Who with? West? That left-armer? Nah...he had a bit to say," Hill replied. "He got me but hasn't really bowled that well."

West, who has joined Manly after five seasons at Mosman, laughs at the memory of that night. "I look forward to chatting it up to someone who's got a bit of lip," he told Inside Back. "I like to get into battles on the field and one-on-one is even better. It brings the best out in my bowling and gives me extra focus. For some they might lose concentration but it really switches me on. It worked well for me that night."
West, 27, has since dropped out of the state system and no longer has a BBL contract, but hopes the move to Manly will reignite his career. "To set myself up to play first class cricket or Big Bash cricket, I want to be in a professional environment and Manly's as close to it as can be at club level," he said. "I wouldn't have come to Manly if I didn't think I had more to offer at a professional level. I have always aimed to play for Australia so until that is completely off the table, it remains my end goal."
West, who has been working extensively with ex-South African quick Morne Morkel over winter, will open the bowling for Manly in the season opener against Northern District at Manly Oval on Saturday.
