A mission to create a 'safer Sydney' for women has been given the green light, with Georges River Council adopting the Greater Sydney Women's Safety Charter.
It recognises the diverse experiences of women and aims to promote a safer city for women of all ages, abilities, identities, and social and cultural backgrounds.
The charter has been developed by the NSW government's Greater Sydney Commission, in partnership with 80 organisations across Greater Sydney, bringing together businesses, government agencies and non-profit organisations.
It aligns with the council's commitment to community safety and will allow for greater engagement, policy change and innovation in community safety.
The charter builds on research into how safe girls feel as they move around the cities in which they live.
It was designed to influence participating organisations' policies and practices, services planning and delivery, in ways that enable women and girls to feel safer and more confident participating in the city's social, economic and cultural life.
The development of the charter was in the making for the past two years, when in December 2019 the Greater Sydney Commission and Transport for NSW co-hosted the Symposium: A City for People - Women and Safety in the City.
An important outcome of this event was the Greater Sydney Commission, Transport for NSW and Committee for Sydney's commitment to develop this charter together.
