Voters will show their support for their candidate of choice this Saturday.
But they could also be supporting other candidates they hadn't considered supporting.
A number of candidates have shown their preference, should they get across the line, for who they would like to see joining them.
This has made for some interesting pairings in Georges River.
Some candidates have chosen to give their preferences to those outside their group or party, with Labor preferencing Liberal and vice versa, along with some independents supporting Liberal or Labor with the major parites returning the favour.
Voters have a choice of voting either 'above the line' for parties and groups of candidates, or voting 'below the line' for individual candidates.
If voting 'above the line', they can place a '1' in the box above the column of candidates who they wish to vote for.
They can give further preferences 2, 3 etc for other groups above the line.
If voting 'below the line', complete a minimum of five preferences, placing the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 in voting squares next to candidate names.
They can keep numbering beyond the minimum preferences to maximise the power of their vote.
Whether voting above or below the line, they can number groups (above) or candidates (below) in the order they would like to see them elected.
The more preferences they complete, the more effective their vote may be.
This is the optional preferential voting system and requires a candidate to receive more than 50 per cent of the vote. This is called the absolute majority of votes.
If a candidate is not elected after the count of first preferences, the candidate with the lowest number of votes is excluded.
Each ballot paper is distributed to the candidates remaining in the count according to the next highest preference.
