Witnesses who may have seen a grain truck crash that killed a two-year-old girl and injured others on a Victorian freeway are being asked to come forward.
Police are investigating the multi-vehicle crash that saw the Calder Freeway at Diggers Rest closed for hours on Monday.
It is believed the truck collided with several vehicles near the Bulla Road overpass about 2.30pm.
A Caulfield South toddler, a rear seat passenger in a car carrying four people, died at the scene.
A 35-year-old man, a 37-year-old woman and a one-year-old girl from the same vehicle and all from Caulfield South, were taken to hospital.
The woman and girl remain in hospital in a critical condition, while the man is stable.
A 62-year-old South Melbourne man driving a Toyota HiLux was trapped under the truck and had to be freed by emergency services. He was also taken to hospital in a critical condition.
Two people in another vehicle escaped serious injury.
The 42-year-old truck driver has been released by police, pending further inquiries.
Investigators are keen to speak to any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage that may have been in the area at the time of the collision.
