A specialist service, which supported thousands of carers across Sutherland Shire and St George during 30 years of operation, has closed.
Sutherland Shire Carer Support Service (SSCSS) organised and provided support groups, education and training and social outings.
The closure was foreshadowed in mid-2021. Subsequent attempts to join with another non-government provider were unsuccessful.
Long-standing charity Orana NSW will commence a carers group in the New Year.
Traci Sami, who was the SSCSS manager for the last 14 years, said, "SSCSS was a wonderful service that impacted many carers' lives".
"We created a safe space for carers to rest, meet with other carers, learn about services available to help them and enjoy social outings together.
"Carers are among the most isolated people within our community and the team at SSCSS worked hard to reach out and connect with them.
"After losing our state funding, (which was transferred to assist fund the NDIS) and later losing our federal funding, (which was transferred to fund the Carer Gateway) we were left with no other choice but to close, despite our heavy lobbying.
"I would like to take this final opportunity to thank carers for the role they play in our community.
"You are our heroes."
