A PUBLIC artwork inspired by the signal fires lit by Aboriginal people, will be installed at Freshwater Lookout.
The artwork will be erected at McKillop Park, off Lumsdaine Drive, later this year following overwhelming support by the community, council says.
In 2021, Northern Beaches Council commissioned First Nations public art team, mili mili, to create the artwork as part of the Coast Walk Public Art program. mili mili is an established First Nations art and design studio co-founded by award winning artist and designer Nicole Monks.
The artwork's concept is inspired by the signal fires lit by Aboriginal people on headlands along the east coast as a system of communication, by traditional Aboriginal structures called gunyas.
The artwork integrates seating which will provide a place for the public to engage, sit and rest, without obstructing the views of ocean and sky.
Council said the artwork responds to the natural environment, local history and contemporary communities of Freshwater and the northern beaches.
Ms Monks said this space will inspire a deeper connection and respect for this Country's continuing custodians.

"This Country holds layers of unseen stories, these stories are made visible when community share knowledge of place," she said.
Council received 40 submissions from the public about the artwork, they are currently being reviewed.
During the consultation period mili mili engaged with local Aboriginal stakeholders. Feedback from the wider community during two information sessions, was overwhelming positive and supportive of the artwork, council said.
The work will be installed by end of November 2022, weather permitting.
