The allegations follow a "complex and protracted" investigation stemming from the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.
The man is accused of repeatedly sexually abusing a child and is expected to appear on Thursday night in Hobart Magistrates Court, Tasmania Police said in a statement.
The charges relate to crimes allegedly committed in the 1980s when he was living in Tasmania.
