THIS week, we published the final edition of the Northern Beaches Review and this is our final newsletter.
So many of you have emailed to ask: WHY?
With the ongoing increases in supply chain costs, there are many publications across Australia that are feeling the pinch, but none more than the free community titles, with no cover price to offset some of these increasing costs.
A free local newspaper is wonderful, but difficult, particularly with paper prices increasing astronomically, on top of content costs and delivery to 65,000 local homes.
Councils are generally great supporters of their local newspapers, and, early on, Northern Beaches Council suggested they would partner with the Review, as they had the Manly Daily before us. Almost two years and many meetings on, it still hasn't happened. They, like so many of us, have had unexpected cost pressures - but I do hope they find a way to support the remaining media, as independent coverage of local issues adds an immeasurable amount to the engagement, vibrancy and dynamism of a community.
But we did have a lot of loyal advertisers and we know, along with the many not-for-profits we covered, they were in turn supported by our readers (thank you). Dogs were adopted, donations made, homes and cars sold, events frequented and businesses bombarded by locals wanting to buy local. Please keep supporting them.
From day one, and for the ensuing 92 weeks, we received thousands of letters from you: intelligent, considered, provocative. And thank you for your many, many lovely emails since we published our last issue. We will miss you, too.
We have had so much fun and learned so much working in what we reckon is the best place to live in Australia, if not the world. And that's not just about all of the natural beauty that surrounds us; but the passionate and creative people.
We still had so many of your stories to tell but it didn't work out.
We look forward to seeing you in the streets, beaches, parks and around the traps.
Please stop and tell us your stories.
