The mother and son were flying back from watching the total solar eclipse in Exmouth and were en route to Jandakot Airport when the plane had a mechanical issue.
The plane was seen landing in the ocean off Leighton Beach, south of Perth, about 5pm on April 20.
The pilot, Michelle Yeats, and her 15-year-old son were able to swim back to shore as stunned bystanders watched on.
Ms Yeats told an ABC reporter on the beach she was at 1500ft and didn't have much time to react.
"I just called a mayday to the tower and then just turned around and landed on the water and tried to get as close to the beach as I could without hitting anybody," she said.

Western Australian Police Acting Inspector Mark Cannon said it was a "scary incident" for the pair.
"The pilot did an exceptional job bringing it down," he said.
"As you can see we're close to a lot of public buildings so they did very well to put it down where they did.
"From what I understand the pilot thought there may have been a problem with the fuel and the engines stopped working."
