This miscommunication results in 13 per cent of Christmas presents being re-gifted, eBay said.
Safe gifts, ones that Australians reliably loved to receive, included camping equipment, coffee makers, Bluetooth speakers and gaming consoles as well as polaroid cameras and smartwatches.
But if Christmas gift inspiration is needed a handful of tech, fashion, toys and gaming experts have compiled the list of this year's hottest present ideas.
Tech lovers who are keen to explore Australia's great outdoors may love a Garmin Satellite communicator for off-grid navigation, eBay's tech expert said.
While in the outback, a tech lover could document their trip with a DJI Mavic Pro drone for "breathtaking aerial photography".
For the bloggers, vloggers and content makers, eBay recommends the Sony ZV-1 camera which is designed for beginners and is a favourite among creators.
The Anker Soundcore Mini Bluetooth speaker is recommended as an easy gift for tech-loving party animals.

Pokémon cards are on a 27-year hot streak and continue to be favourite Christmas stocking fillers.
"The Pokémon 151 collection is the top pick this Christmas for kids and big kids alike," eBay's toy expert said.
Builder Lego was one of eBay Australia's most searched toys this year and a recommended present for the whole family to enjoy.
Colouring-in books, crayons and paints were staple gifts for budding artists, the toy specialist said.
"You can branch out with jewellery-making kits or kid-friendly pottery sets to inspire their creativity."
Encourage nature lovers with gardening kits, magnifying glasses for spying insects and binoculars for bird-watching.
The Disney Mickey and Minnie Panorama 1000 piece or the Lego Art Hokusai are ideal gifts for kids who love to ponder over puzzles.
