The hospital welcomed six recent nurse graduates, who have finished their placements.
Compared to other hospitals in Sydney that traditionally take large intakes of nurse graduates each year, Calvary Kogarah Hospital offers six nursing graduate placements, making the experience more personalised.
With the hospital's focus on palliative care, it gives the young nurses an opportunity to follow their passion for end-of-life care, among other areas of care for people in the community.
One of the graduates, Alyssa Myers, was excited to begin her nursing career. "I was really excited to start working at Calvary Kogarah because I knew that I was guaranteed a palliative care rotation, which is my chosen speciality," she said.
"Being a smaller hospital, you have so much support at Calvary Kogarah. All the staff are there to help you learn and they really made me feel like a valued member of the team from day one. It is a really satisfying feeling to know that I've made it and that I've completed my placement as a nurse grad. I can now go on with the rest of my career with a good foundation."
Fellow graduate Natalie Petrovska also looks forward to the next stage of her career in nursing. "It has been a great journey at Calvary Kogarah. I've learnt so much and had so much support from the nurse unit managers, nurse educators and staff. It is like a family here at Calvary Kogarah and I've loved every minute of it," she said.
