The council also decided to refer the issue to the Sutherland Shire Crime Prevention Community Safety Precinct Committee, "in order for council to have a direct conversation with local police".
The moves follow continuing complaints about illegal use of e-bikes, particularly in Cronulla mall and on the Esplanade, and advice from an expert that the council could face big payouts in the event of accidents occurring.
The expert, who has headed government and private CTP (compulsory third party) insurers, spoke at the council meeting.
The resolution took a much softer line in regard to policing than the original motion put by Cr Leanne Farmer, which sought for the council to call on police to "strictly enforce" laws regarding e-bikes and e-scooters.
