AFTER long campaign battles for better safety measures for school-children, new traffic lights and a pedestrian crossing are finally in operation at Illawong.

Parents and Menai High School were concerned about students’ safety at a dangerous section of Old Illawarra Road.
Their fears were realised last year when a girl, 12, was hit and injured by a car when she tried to cross the busy road.
Sutherland Shire Council had allocated $150,000 in its 2013-14 budget for traffic signals at the intersection of Old Illawarra Road and Oriana Drive.
The state government approved an additional $250,000 in April this year.
The project has been welcomed by the school community.
‘‘We are delighted with the installation of these protections for our students moving in and out of the school zone,’’ said Menai High principal, Edith McNally.
‘‘The traffic is flowing in a smooth and orderly manner with no significant delays, and there is no longer any need for students to dodge and weave through the traffic.
‘‘We are appreciative of the input from state and local government that made it possible.’’
Parent Paula Collins said that it was a positive change.
‘‘It’s brilliant; the kids are now waiting at the lights,’’ she said.
‘‘The bus stop has also been moved to ensure kids go there, so they are not tempted to walk the other way.
‘‘I’ve heard that some drivers are annoyed that they have to stop and wait, but they do get a green arrow now.’’
An Education Department spokesman said student safety during peak times was a community priority.
‘‘Speeding, dangerous manoeuvres and not giving way to pedestrians around schools increases the risk of injury and trauma for students,’’ he said.
‘‘Parents and carers modelling legal and safe road behaviours support the main safety messages for students and what they learn about in road safety in the classroom.’’
