Premier Gladys Berejiklian has promised a $17 million multi-storey commuter car park for Jannali if the Coalition wins the election in March.
The announcement of the 200-space facility comes a week after Ms Berejiklian promised a $25 million car park with 210-spaces at Engadine.
Ms Berejiklian said Transport for NSW had begun discussions on a site at Jannali, and would “work closely with Sutherland Shire Council to deliver an outcome that is in best keeping with the local environment”.
The Premier said there were already 275 commuter car parking spaces at Jannali, but they couldn’t cope with the demand.
“When you approach the station, you can see people parking in all sorts of positions,” she said.
Miranda MP Eleni Petinos said many residents had complained to her about having the surrounding streets congested by vehicles of people using the train station every day.
“We did a petition around Kareela, Bonnet Bay, Oyster Bay and also Jannali to gauge community support [for a new car park],” she said..
“There was overwhelming support for this project.”
Ms Petinos said after a site was chosen, planning work and public consultation would follow, with construction expected to take 18 months after the appointment of a contractor.
Ms Berejiklian said the government wanted to ensure the design met community expectations.
“We know everybody desperately wants the extra spaces, we have got the money to do it and now we have to get a final design everyone is happy with,” she said.
“I would like to see that process happen as soon as possible.”
Ms Berejiklian acknowledged the new car parks would cater for many motorists who were not shire residents.
“We know a lot of people are coming from further south,” she said.
“So, if we put multiple extra spaces in at different stations, it takes the pressure off places like Jannali and Engadine.”
