Upgrades at the Mortdale Maintenance Centre are now underway as part of the NSW Government's $600 million investment in the More Trains More Services program.
Oatley MP Mark Coure said that the upgrade will increase the efficiency and capacity of the centre by installing new maintenance sheds and a new electrical substation.
"The upgrades to the Mortdale Maintenance Centre are part of wider infrastructure upgrades planned across the network to enable more frequent services to be delivered for customers on the T4 Illawarra, T8 Airport and South Coast lines," Mr Coure said.
"We are prioritising these lines because they are among the busiest on the network, catering for 440,000 trips on a typical day which is around one third of daily rail customers."
Mr Coure visited the centre this week to view how work was progressing on the upgrades which will allow the entire Tangara fleet to be maintained at one location.
"Tangara trains service the T4 Illawarra Line and these improvements at the maintenance centre will allow us to allocate more Tangaras to the T4 Line, increasing the number of services," Mr Coure said.
T4 Illawarra Line customers will benefit from a 20 per cent increase in peak services, he said.
This includes an extra three services an hour in the peak and the additional capacity to carry 3,600 more customers.
Other key rail upgrades will be undertaken on the T8 line as part of the More Trains More Services program, including Wolli Creek substation and T8 Airport Line power supply upgrade, which will lead to improvements for customers who use Riverwood, Narwee and Beverly Hills stations.
"The changes we are planning will result in additional capacity to carry 2,400 more customers on the T8 Airport Line during the busiest times," Mr Coure said.
"The T8 Airport Line will also benefit from more brand new Waratah Series 2 trains. This is in addition to the 24 Waratah Series 2 already in service."
